WEEK 47
Starting with experimenting and shooting footage
This week we focus on what it means to us to be Dutch. We ask ourselves several questions that have to do with being Dutch and meeting the white standard. We then collect visual material from places that represent the Netherlands for us and that have a lot of influence on our view of society.
Using different markets in society as a metafor for our view on dutch society
We often find what we don't know scary, so we don't allow ourselves the opportunity to get to know something.
Different cultures coming together. The market is where people gather. Where the community gathers. A place where generations intertwine. A place where cultures come together. A place where Moroccan-looking young people sell Dutch herring. Where baklava is bought by Hans. Everyone has a place in the market. What is my place in the market. What is our place in the market. What is my effect on the market. How does the market effect me.
There are so many cultures on the market that it doesn't feel like the Netherlands, it feels like a different place in our country. I am in the minority in the market. The white standard does not exist. Or maybe secretly. What Privileges do I have on the market. Do I own new privileges, or do I have the same privileges that I also have outside the market. Am I welcome to the market? I feel more welcome than in a market where there are many white people. Is the market a representation of me. Is the market a representation of society? Which society does the market represent. What role does the white standard serve in the market? What effect will I have by entering the market? What effect does the market have on my view of society?
We often find what we don't know scary, so we don't allow ourselves the opportunity to get to know something.
What does the representation of a market look like? The white norm has created the market that there must be certain elements, and certain people go to the market, despite the fact that the place is as accessible as possible. Every market is different. What is my association with a market, what should my market look like? Is that a thought of a white norm, is that a thought of a privilege, is that a thought of someone who is aware of his privilege.
What does the market say about my position? What does the market say about my upbringing?
Is it a privilege that I can enjoy cultural food without feeling the struggle of that community. Without being judged that I can buy and enjoy the food from that community.
People view the world and a country as something it should be. I see the Netherlands as a country like what it should look like. But why do we have these contempts, it is a form of representation. A longing for something we know. A market can differ and that has its charms. A place can be so very different, while it is within a country.
INSPIRATION THIS WEEK
Our reflection on this week is that the four of us have really different lives when it comes to our neighborhood, friends and background. Over this week the four of us shot pictures from our neighborhood and special places that connect to our story's
WEEK 48
Outro Song?
Using metaphors while making confessions. Only with the last question, the most important question, "what is your position within the white standard?" do we come into the picture and answer this question on the stool.
Between each confession something happens that is an addition/strengthening of our confession or a continuation of the confession, in order to make it a whole. Spoken word, song, visuals.
Also let people around us confess and show their perspectives with just simple black images and subtitles without you knowing who is behind it.
- Making confessions is also a certain reflection on yourself. We continuously reflect on ourselves and this is also confronted with our appearance through reflections. Think about looking in the mirror. Mirrors are an important reflection point if you want to look at yourself. Sunglasses can also provide a reflection. We reflect on our position within the white norm by making confessions. A confession is therefore also a point of reflection. Creating abstract images related to a reflection and that can be anything: Ramen, soup, water, puddles, mirrors, sunglasses, wine bottles, glasses, plastic. Everything that reflects.
- Our shared living room. Bringing things together. Which is home to us. Culture, education, memories, etc. Confessions in public space means being open to society and out of the comfort zone. But you may not always feel comfortable. At home you feel safe and the white standard doesn't matter. A room or large table. Where we bring the things together into our shared living room where we feel safe and the white standard does not exist. Contrast with public areas where the norm influences a lot. Detailed shots of the stuff. Abstract transitions. Wider spots of the entire room/table.
- Breaking standards. Breaking free from society. Like, for example, animals that come out of their burrows. Snail, Turtles, Crabs.

WEEK 49
New Concept
Reflect critically on our position within the white norm by making confessions. As creators and researchers, we make confessions and map our perspectives. But we also ask other people to come and do confessions with us, to give so many different perspectives. What are our privileges, how do we benefit from them, when do we have no privileges and suffer from the white norm, what are examples of this? How do we maintain the white standard? No one is not involved with the white norm, so our goal is to create awareness of the white norm and that it exists. We want to find out what our position is within the white norm by honestly and critically reflecting on our privileges and benefits. Ultimately, this can also lead to awareness or critical thinking on the part of the viewer about their position in the white norm.
I find the representation of Stuart Hall very interesting. That is why I would like to look at the representation within Dutch society. How am I represented in Dutch society? Do I always agree with this representation or do I always feel part of this group I am represented by? I want to look at the benefits I have through my appearance and the group through which I am represented. I find three aspects interesting as a basis for this: ethnicity, sexuality and gender. Furthermore, fashion plays an important role when it comes to representation and I could perhaps combine that too.
This week we are focusing on starting the conversation with each other about our position within the white standard. What are our privileges and when do we feel disadvantage of the white norm? By having the conversation we want to check with ourselves what we think our position is. By recording it and listening back you can critically reflect on your answers and you can also improve them or adjust your view on certain aspects.
Conversation between Pascal and Robin Dutch
There are a lot of ideas in our group but finding the perfect setting seems hard. How can we make sure that we film everything that we want to film and are we clear in our story? Do we need more filming materials or voice overs are we making a point or not? Slowly there starts to form a line in what we want to do. By discussing this every week and listing to each others points we hope to create a story which includes al of our own experiences with fitting film material

CONCLUSIONS CONVERSATIONS
What we made this week:
Experiment:
After we had conversations with each other, we came to the conclusion that we need to make the answers and what we discuss more concrete. We are still very much looking for what exactly we want to say and how we can do this in the right way. We think it's very pure and raw when we do confessions, where we simply sit in front of the camera and talk about our position within the white norm, based on certain questions. Just as we are open and honest in the discussions within the group, we also want to act outwardly. We actually want to tell you what you normally don't say quickly. So we're really confessing, we're being honest. You can find many ways to do that, but the most raw way is simply to look into the camera and tell what your position is within the white standard.
We started collecting pieces very early on, as stated before. These pieces we collected vary from work made by cinematographers to pieces we shot ourselves. In the very beginning of the group project we started to shoot pictures from the places where we grew up to places that have a special meaning in our own projects and answers. Later on we collected our own shooted film material and voice overs. To do more research we tried to search for documentaires and episodes of the subject white standards the materials that we found were very interesting. It went from people there opinions and the way they look at things but also how do people feel and act in this subject.
When youre a kid youre not awear of the stuff that is happening around you. The older you get the more you see. Am I as of today aware of my position in the society? Am I aware of my ethnicity, gender and sexuality and what is my part in this? What is my view and opnion on these subjects and how did I create an opinion in and about these subjects.
I've always had moments in my life where I don't feel at home in the place I live, Oude-Tonge. Thinking about what I wanted to make for this minor, I decided I want to, via film, paint an image about my upbringing and how I had to fight against conservative gender norms and racist socialisation
WEEK 50
In week 50, we started filming specific scenes for our final assessment 'Confessies'. We asked people to answer certain questions about the white norm and how they experience that phenomenon. Our 'pilot'/experiment is added below this text.
WEEK 51
In week 51, we had to finish the product. We translated all the pieces that made it into the film, we shot the final footage and edited it all.
After some discussion, we noticed a corresponding topic: the white norm. We decided to think about a way to bring that up in our final assessment.
After our conversations we noticed that we all want to share our experience within the white standards. Everyone has something to tell about there position in the Dutch society. Most people in our group are white so we want to make it more diverse but are still trying to figure out if we are going to film people or interview them. We all agreed that sharing our experience to other people would be a nice idea.
Due to my ethnicity, I have often experienced discrimination towards me. I feel excluded in society by the discrimination I've experienced and most likely will continue to experience. In this society there's a certain standard you have to meet I would like to challenge and eliminate this standard.
